All Idlewild’s language courses are fun and practical, and have been recommended by New York Magazine and Daily Candy.

The classes are taught in our beautiful bookstores in Manhattan (near Union Square) or Brooklyn (Cobble Hill) by native speakers with several years’ teaching experience and a participatory method that will get you speaking quickly.

In addition to basic grammar and vocabulary, our lessons incorporate in-class speaking practice and real-life situations (at the restaurant, asking and giving directions, etc) that are useful for travelers.

Our Italian classes are taught by Stefano Di Cicco or Claudia Galeffi, both natives of Italy with several years’ teaching experience.

Registration for our summer classes is now open! Please note that the summer schedule has been compressed into 8 weeks of slightly longer classes (15 minutes longer than in our usual 10-week courses).

- Class size is limited to 14 people. Classes fill up fast and availability is first-come, first-served.
- Our teachers employ a dynamic method that emphasizes grammar and vocabulary but is focused primarily on spoken profiency and oral comprehension.
- There are no make-up classes. On the first day of class, each student will receive a syllabus that lists the weekly assignments so you can keep up with your studies if you have to miss a class.
- If you wish to cancel your registration, you must contact Idlewild by telephone or email at least seven days before the start date of your class to receive a refund. If you wish to postpone your registration to a later session, you must contact Idlewild at least three days before the start date of your class to receive a credit toward a future session (good for one year).

Coming this summer: classes for kids!

This summer, we’re introducing language courses for kids in our new location in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. The classes will provide a playful introduction to French, Spanish and Italian that specifically focuses on oral communication and comprehension.

Studies have shown that children have an amazing ability to learn and absorb foreign languages. Our new kids’ classes, all taught by dynamic native speakers with several years’ teaching experience, will nurture this natural skill through educational and creative activities such as singing, miming and arts and crafts.

Classes will be 8 weeks long, running from the second week of July through the end of August. We’ll post the schedule in April, but if you areinterested please send an email to classes@idlewildbooks.com with the following information: age of your child, language of interest, and whether he or she has studied that language before.

SAMPLE SCHEDULE (for French for Kids):

WEEK 1 – Greetings and introductions (Bonjour, Au revoir, Je m’appelle Marie. Et toi, tu t’appelles comment ? Je m’appelle Alex. Enchantee!)

WEEK 2 – How are you?/Small talk (Comment ca va? Ca va bien ! Ca va mal! Ca va comme-ci, comme-ca!)

WEEK 3 – What is it?/This is…/Animals (Qu’est ce que c’est ? C’est un chat ! C’est un chien!)

WEEK 4 – Negative sentences/Animals (Est ce que c’est un chat ? Non, ce n’est pas un chat. C’est un chien. C’est un chat ou un chien ? C’est un chat.)

WEEK 5 – This is/They are …/Numbers 1-10 (C’est un chat. Ce sont 4 chiens.)

WEEK 6 – How many…?/There is/there are…/Numbers review (Il y a combien de chats dans la boite? Il y a 3 chats dans la boite. Il y a combien de filles dans la classe ? Il y a combien d’oiseaux?)

WEEK 7 – What is it?/Fruits and other food (J’ai faim! Qu’est ce que c’est? C’est une pomme/poire/banane/orange)

WEEK 8 – What color is it? (C’est de quelle couleur ? C’est bleu.)
