Money Heist (La casa de papel)

Álex Pina (2017, Spain), Netflix

This new Spanish TV series is already a hit in Spain, having aired two seasons, but is just making its way to the United States via Netflix. A motley crew of Spaniards take a group of hostages and lock themselves inside the Royal Mint with a plan to get away with the biggest heist of all time. Think Ocean’s Eleven meets Run Lola Run and you’ve got the idea–definitely binge-worthy!

Mar de Plastico

Juan Carlos Cueto (2015, Spain), Netflix

When the daughter of a small Southern Spanish town’s mayor is brutally murdered, racial issues in the town rise to the surface. The investigation is led by Inspector Aguirre who is–you guessed it–a complex anti-hero with a complex backstory of his own. A whodunit with an interesting commentary about contemporary Spanish politics.

Boy Missing (Secuestro)

Mar Targarona (2016, Spain), Netflix

This movie takes the stereotype of passionate, vengeful Spanish women and runs with it. A high-powered attorney is distraught when her son is kidnapped and returned severely damaged. She’s even more distraught when the kidnapper gets off–so she decides to take justice into her own hands. Evil-doers beware a mother with a vendetta!
