The Wages of Fear (Le salaire de la peur)

Henri-Georges Clouzot (1953, France/Italy), Amazon

The classic film that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout despite its simple set-up. Four down-on-their luck would be colonizers from France agree to drive a load of extremely unstable nitroglycerin through the South American jungle to a remote oilfield. Every bump along the road could mean a fiery death. Powerful and very tense!

Army of Shadows (L’armée des ombres)

Jean-Pierre Melville (1969, France/Italy), Amazon

A lost masterpiece that was banned in France for decades and didn’t get a full release until 2006. A deeply pessimistic look at the French resistance during the Nazi occupation. There are many villains, but no uncomplicated heroes here–from the first few scenes, we know that even if our protagonists survive the war, they will not find it easy to move on.

24 days (24 jours)

Alexandre Arcady (2014, France), Netflix

Based on a terrifying true story. A wealthy young Parisian man is kidnapped and held for ransom–but the plot quickly becomes more complex. Anti-semitism is at the root of the crime and many more are implicated than anyone would have believed at first.
